Keynote by H.E. Eng. Kamal Aly

In his presentation on 'Water Issues, Policies Framework, and Perspectives in the MENA Region', H.E. Eng. Kamal Aly addressed the different aspects of water management. With figures he showed the seriousness of water problems in the Arab world. He also went into detail in the possibilities of re-use of waste water, the risks of re-use of waste water and how to decrease the risks.

Amongst the biggest water problems in the Arab world he mentioned:

• limited access to water supply and sanitation
• mounting environmental problems
• fragmented institutional structures
• lack of regulation and legislation
• lack of market-based initiatives
• insufficient public awareness

Increased capacity building, strengthening decentralisation, more transparency and awareness raising are amongst the actions needed to address these problems.
