CAP-NET's tutorial on IWRM

What is meant by integrated water resources management? Why is it so important? What are we losing without it? What are the gains to be made from introducing it? If it is so good, why isn’t everybody doing it already?

This brief introductory tutorial is aimed at policy makers, water managers, trainers and educators who want a basic understanding of IWRM principles.

We virtually take it for granted these days that any international conference or ministerial meeting involved with sustainable development will result in recommendations for more and better “integrated water resources management” (IWRM). Governments are repeatedly urged to introduce or extend IWRM, as a vital component of their sustainable development agenda. But why is it so important? What are we losing without it?

This tutorial provides the ammunition (arguments, examples, methodologies) to make the case for IWRM and to counter those who may oppose it on institutional or sectoral grounds.

The CD package has been built in PowerPoint enabling the user to easily adapt the tutorial to one’s own region or context. It allows you to;

  • use and replace with pictures from your own region.
  • add examples from your own experience.
  • translate the CD into a different language (currently available in English, French and Spanish).
  • or change the package completely.
