Madiha's life made easy

People’s life in Kassab village is witnessing a significant change after starting the application of EMPOWERS first pilot project. The pilot project includes connecting water pipes to unconnected houses through giving loans to those who are unable to pay the expenses needed for the water connection.

Madiha and her family used to drink water from the “zeer” which is a local water container that is very well known all over rural Egypt. It is mainly for storing water for drinking and cooking. It is not neither a practical nor a safe and clean mean of water use and water storage. The quality of water stored inside is not always good too because Madiha either gets it from neighbors who have water connection or from the canal if the neighbors refuse to give her water.

from the loans given by EMPOWERS for making in-house water connections. Her life and her children’s became much easier. She has tap water and she doesn’t have to worry every morning where and how to get water. She can drink, cook, clean and give bath to her children faster than before and using a better water quality.

Although Madiha has to pay back the loan she used to get the water connection to the village Community Development Association (CDA), she and her husband are happy that they could pay a little amount every month instead of paying it all at once. This gave them the opportunity to buy a modern stove where they can cook their food and bake their bread.

The family still has other water problem such as getting rid of the wastewater.

They have to dump the water in front of their house which creates an unhealthy environment
that surrounds the houses.
The village still needs an appropriate system for sanitation and solid waste management.
